WKTL Recreational Throwing

One of the big hurdles we’ve faced in knife throwing since its inception is the learning curve. Knife throwing takes a bit more time and effort to master than axe throwing or many other sports. This can be pretty intimidating for new throwers as it will take a good bit of skill for a single rotation already, but the jump in difficulty to the double rotation, coupled with the distance change, is tough. And it’s the number one deterrent for a lot of newer competitors we’ve observed and heard.

We wanted to find a way to accommodate rookie competitors without compromising the hard work that seasoned competitors have put in to elevate the sport, and we’re happy to announce that we’ve found the best way to welcome newcomers to the league without alienating them from competing with the rest of our awesome community.

Divisions for Recreational Knife Throwing competitors and Pro competitors!

What will that mean for everyone? If you’re new to knife throwing and select the Rec division, the only major difference from the established ruleset is that you won’t be throwing at the 15ft line. And if you’ve been competing in the WKTL Knife discipline beforehand, then there’s no real change for you! Though there are some considerations you should keep in mind when throwing with a Rec thrower, there are details in the rules linked below. All competitors who have been competing have been marked as Pro status. All Knife competitors, regardless of division, will compete with each other, so we don’t have to separate the player community. Hopefully, the Rec competitors will eventually try and succeed in moving up to the Pro division as well!

Some other important notes:

  • Competitors cannot change their division during an active season if they have completed one or more games. But if they do they will not be eligible for worlds bid again until they are Pro again.
  • The divisions currently only apply to Standard Knife throwing leagues and tournaments, not Knife Duals.
  • All official tournaments with bids to WAKTC must be thrown in Standard Knife format.
  • A Rec thrower can compete in official tournaments, but if so, they must throw with Pro rules, not Rec.
  • If a Rec competitor earns a bid in a tournament, they may decline that bid to maintain their Rec status.

These are just some general points, but the official wording and rules for competing as Rec are here in Section K of the Rules Page.

The App has already been set, and you should see your divisions reflected on your profile. All division change requests from Pro to Rec will be subject to approval. Submit a request by completing this form: Knife Division Change Form
