The World Knife Throwing League (WKTL) is happy to introduce our Head Judge, EJ Harris, and his journey to the role is as unique as his judging expertise. EJ Harris, a New England native now living just south of Boston with his wife, Catherine, and their three cats, brings a rich background in competition, starting not with knives, but with debate.
A former debate coach and Chief Adjudicator of the North American Debating Championships, EJ’s sharp eye for rules and fairness was translated perfectly to knife throwing. His love story with Catherine even began with a playful jab about her shoes during a debate round before she argued her way into his heart.
The couple discovered knife throwing while living in Milwaukee, first trying axes at an independent venue and first threw WATL and Knives in a venue owned by the World Axe Throwing League Head Judge Tabitha Carrol. Catherine loved knives immediately, and while EJ struggled to get the hang of them as a competitor at first, he agreed to get certified and help organize knife leagues at Longhouse Axe Throwing and at Crazy Axes, the two Massachusetts venues where he competes in weekly leagues and judges WKTL.
After some time judging and competing in local leagues, EJ then volunteered as a judge for larger tournaments such as the World Axe and Knife Throwing Championships. His thoroughness and active enthusiasm for judging were noticed by the Commissioner of WKTL, Evan Walters. Evan saw the great potential EJ had and contacted him about the idea of having a Head Judge for WKTL. From there, they began work on what experience was needed for the role, working with the lead officials of the World Axe Throwing League as well, and after a year of preparation in officiating for many tournaments and leagues, the WKTL has decided to make EJ the first Head Judge for the organization officially.
With countless knife matches, marathons, and tournaments under his belt, EJ’s promotion to Head Judge felt inevitable. He made his debut in the role at the Tulsa WAKTC in April 2024, and the WKTL is thrilled to announce him officially and have his expertise to help guide the World Knife Throwing League as we continue to grow!
