WKTL Rules Update 2026

If you’re a regular in the World Knife Throwing League, you’ll be happy to hear that for 2026, our core rules are staying largely unchanged based on community feedback. The format you know and love is staying put, but we’re making one exciting addition aimed at growing our awesome community.

Introducing Amateur Knife Throwing

We want to make it easier for new throwers to step up and compete. That’s why we’re officially adding an Amateur category alongside our Standard competition. Whether you’re just getting started or prefer throwing from a shorter distance, this new option is designed to welcome more people into the sport.

How It Works

The gameplay essentially will remain the same for standard knife throwing league but the Amateur rules differ in comparison with the standard ruleset is outlined below.

Standard Rules:

  • First two sets: Single rotation, thrown from the 10-foot line.
  • Final two sets: Two or more rotations, thrown from the 15-foot line.

Amateur Rules:

  • All sets are thrown from the 10-foot line.
  • Rotation style is up to you.

Additional Amateur Rules

  • Amateur throwers will not be eligible for World Championship Bids. The leaderboard will be updated so you can filter standard players and amateur throwers.
  • Every incoming player into the scoring app with a new profile will be listed automatically in the app as an amateur thrower. They will be able to switch to a standard thrower at any time.
  • Everyone who has competed in previous seasons in tournaments that is in the app currently will remain listed as a standard knife thrower. If any players wish to change their status from a standard thrower to an amateur thrower, they will need to contact the WKTL (at WKTL@worldknifethrowingleague.com) to be put under review by the Commissioner.

The amateur designation we’re working to have ready for season 1, but it will depend on whether we can finalize that functionality in the app. If it is not ready by season 1, then we will have it by Season 2. But it should not affect any gameplay or worlds’ bids for season 1 either way.

That is the update in a nutshell. There are some more specifics you can see on the official knife throwing rules in regards to safety throwing with amateurs.
